The Transition Ship – Navigando nella Tempesta Perfetta

… Eravamo dispersi. Uno qua e uno là, tante isole, tutti però avevano intuito che qualcosa non quadrava: qualcuno si preoccupava del clima che cambia troppo in fretta, qualcuno dei combustibili fossili che stanno finendo, qualcuno del cibo che viene da lontano non ci nutre più, qualcuno dell’economia globale che aumenta le disuguaglianze, e nessuno credeva più alla favola della crescita infinita…ma ognuno di noi, un giorno, ha incontrato qualcuno che ha collegato queste intuizioni e gli ha mostrato tutto il quadro. In quel preciso momento, abbiamo capito di essere come poveri marinai che navigavano a vista nella tempesta perfetta.
Che fare? Se aspettiamo che qualcuno da un transatlantico ci getti un salvagente, faremo in tempo ad annegare, nuotando da soli le nostre braccia non ci porteranno lontano, ma, se nella nostra comunità, provassimo insieme a costruire (con materiali locali), una zattera per arrivare a un porto sicuro dopo la tempesta?

Cosa avreste detto voi quel giorno, se vi foste trovati a chiacchierare, tra una focaccia e una torta, con Rob (Hopkins) durante Transition Fest organizzata per il suo arrivo a Bologna?
– Finalmente un’iniziativa di Transizione nel centro di Bologna. Great! Quali sono i vostri principali progetti?
– Ehm… – gli ho risposto io, riempiendo il suo bicchiere – Ma assaggia questo Sangiovese! E’ un vino locale che fanno sulle nostre colline. E’ buono?
Cambio di argomento? Un po’ di soggezione, sapete com’è, un po’ come quando il ragazzo che strimpella da poco la chitarra incontra di persona la sua rockstar preferita, che chiede proprio a lui quali brani abbia già composto. Quando incontri una persona, di quelle rare, che assomiglia alle parole che dice, rimani sempre un po’ spiazzato e ti metti a pensare… Noi “Ragazzi Dentro Porta” non abbiamo ancora avviato un orto, per ora stiamo coltivando relazioni, non abbiamo ancora fondato imprese locali, ma fatto incontrare tante persone che ora sono grandi amiche, abbiamo cercato un contatto con l’amministrazione locale senza grande successo, ma nel farlo abbiamo scoperto di avere tante cose in comune con alcuni nostri vicini. E abbiamo fatto sì un po’ di laboratori, letto insieme il Manuale, ma non abbiamo ancora ufficializzato nessun “gruppo guida”; in realtà ci siamo resi conto di aver radunato una piccola “Ciurma” magari non disciplinatissima, ma veramente ricca di biodiversità, che quindi potrebbe essere abbastanza resiliente per affrontare la tempesta…

Pensavo davvero tutte queste cose mentre Rob gustava il Sangiovese? No, in realtà cercavo solo di non rovinare la sorpresa del Teatrointransizione!

… We were scattered. One here and one there, like many islands, but all had sensed that something was wrong: someone was concerned that the climate is changing too fast, someone that fossil fuels are almost over, someone that the food that comes from too far away and that isn’t feeding us anymore, someone that the global economy increasing inequality and no one believed anymore in the tale of infinite growth … but each of us, one day, met someone who has linked these insights and showed us the whole picture. At that precise moment, we understood to be like poor sailors sailing on sight in the perfect storm. What to do? If we expect that someone from a transatlantic throws us a life jacket, we will have time to drown, swimming trusting only in our arms will not get us far, but if we all together try to build in our community (with local materials), a raft to get a safe haven after the storm ?

What would you have said that day, if you had been talking, between a cake and a pie, with Rob (Hopkins) during Transition Fest organized for his arrival in Bologna? – Finally a Transition initiative in Bologna city center. Great! What are your main projects? – Um…- I said, filling his glass – But please taste this Sangiovese! It’s a local wine from our hills. Is it good? – Change of subject? A bit of uneasiness for me, you know, it was a bit like when a guy who have just started to strum the guitar meets in person his favorite rock star, who asks him what songs he had composed. When you meet a person, of those rare, one resembling the words he says, that makes you feel a bit lost and you start thinking … We “Guys Inside The Gate”** have not yet started a community garden, for now we are cultivating relationships, we have not yet established local companies, but many people met each other thanks to the group and now are great friends, we tried to contact local authorities without a lot of success, but in doing so we found we had many things in common with some of our neighbours. And we have made some laboratories, we read the Transition Handbook, but we have not yet officially formed the core-group; in fact we realized that we have assembled a “crew” maybe not highly disciplined, but very rich in biodiversity, which could be resilient enough to face the storm… Was I really thinking all this stuff while Rob was tasting Sangiovese ? No, actually I was only trying not to spoil the surprise of Theater-in-transition!
